Dennis Amore

You may be interested in my father Dennis Lawrence Amore. He was quite a giant among the Anglo's in India, not only as an MLA but a philanthropist and inventor. I shall include newspaper cuttings as well for your perusal and interest

A family history as described by Priscilla Clements

While surfing the net and reading the pages on Anglo-Indians (AI's), I came across pages upon pages of famous AI‘s. Many of these so well renowned, some of whom have touched our lives, some that we have read about, others who inspired us to hold our heads high and count ourselves as fortunate, to have a kaleidoscope as a family background.

Dennis Lawrence Amore was among the giants of these eminent people who was well known in Bombay (Mumbai) in the State of Maharashtra. Dennis was born on the 14th September, 1910 in Parbatterpure , West Bengal. He was the youngest child to Peter Pascal Amor and Mary (Gordon)-De‘Mello. His father died when he was 2 months old. This early loss of his father was in a way, the corner stone and building block to Dennis‘ determination, gusto, and magnetic personality. (The original surname Amor was changed by some of the siblings to Amore.)

As a child he had modest schooling in Calcutta but this did not stop him from dreaming of the unattainable. He enrolled in night school and completed Pharmaceutical Studies. He secured a job as a chemist. From this springboard he landed into Smith Stanistreet & Co, a large English based firm.

His British managers soon acknowledged his fortitude and charismatic personality and he was asked to head up a new branch in Bombay. Around this time he met Frank Anthony from New Delhi and this was the beginning of friendship to last a lifetime.

Dennis arrived in Bombay about 1941 with his wife Mavis and 3 boys Ivor, Owen and Robert (Bobby) The new role found him importing tinctures, chemicals, and the best of champagne and cognacs. In 1946 he and Mavis had a daughter Priscilla. It was about this time, (give or take a few years) that he imported the machine to start the facilitation of the production of Aspro in India.

Dennis loved his sport and was billiards champ at the Catholic Gymkhana and his interests widened to angling. He would take along his entire family and later introduced this sport to his friends. Powai Lake was the jewel in those days. He wrote articles in the Times of India on angling and later published 2 editions on Angling. The rich and the famous around Bombay frequented the Lake and it was here he would meet the Indian Actors and many overseas visitors. The Indian Fisheries Department consulted with him and transported fingerlings from Bengal to this lake. The Bombay Aquarium also consulted with him, and he became the President of All India Angling Association.

His passion for communication in English, began to challenge the state Government, which wanted English to topple as the medium of instruction in schools. With the help of Frank Anthony, Dennis became the voice of Anglo-Indians in the State and was elected with the backing of Mr Anthony to become the MLA for Maharastra State . His primary role was to entrench our mother tongue into the Anglo-Indian Schools and keep it, at least,a language of choice in others. He was director on the Boards of schools in Barnes – Deolali, at the time Mr& Mrs Davis were principals, Poona, and Bombay. He travelled to Delhi, Bangalore and several places, chairing and saturating news papers with articles to enlighten the new independent India, that Anglo-Indians were a force to be reckoned with and would not just lie down or disappear.

He devoted his time to the Scottish orphanage and the other orphanages. Parents of wealthy Indian families, to help enrol their children into English speaking schools, were forever approaching him. This he did, as he knew the shoe would shift to the other foot – one day. An influx of young AI boys from country towns and other cities came to Bombay to seek their fortunes. They had heard via the grape vine that there was a man who could help. That was Dennis. He called his friends to shift that shoe!! - Reciprocate the many favours, and these boys found jobs. He started a philanthropic home for young men. He and Mavis would spend many hours there Mavis sometimes cooking herself, cleaning, sewing bed sheets and being a surrogate mother.

Many of the lads showed great talents, he encouraged them to spread their wings and leave India. His contacts with the Police and other authorities, helped shorten the passport queues and before long hordes of young men and women and small families left for the UK, Canada, New Zealand and Australia.

He continued to work tirelessly for the Anglo-Indian Community and the local community as a whole. The Scottish Graveyard on Barrack Street, was designated by the municipality to become a block of flats, but Dennis fought for it to be returned to nature… a park for children. He unselfishly, with the help of the Scottish community, enlisted every name on every head stone and devoutly had a memorial stone erected.

Dennis was now Export manager for Ciba in India; he started his own business and found time to become an inventor. The National Research & Development Corporation Of India recognized his inventions of Tar Guard and Lens-Glo. Mrs Indria Ghandi presented him with an award in 1974. He travelled the world, exporting Araldite and other Ciba products- like Binaca toothpaste…. Remember the Binaca Hit Parade on Radio Ceylon?

Dennis exported his own inventions and spices and had a sole agency in Australia. He prided himself with the export of Araldite to Australia as some of it was used to build the Opera House!. He exported the first Alphonso Mangoes to Sydney, in the early 1970‘s. They were expensive and were served at the largest hotels and Government House. He received a letter from Australia’s Prime Minister Billy MacMahon, in appreciation of this.

A Stroke in 1977 soon made this energetic, lovable and charismatic man slow down. He and his wife migrated to Australia 1981 to join 3 of their children and several grandchildren. They enjoyed their years together in Werrington, NSW. Mavis passed away in 1989 and Dennis spirited on. He tried to learn computers, he would totter to the TAFE and gleefully say it was "All Bull Dust"!!!!. He gave several humorous talks on the life in India, he would keep the retired men engrossed with his perfect English… often being asked how he could speak with such enthusiasm, panache and eloquence.

His answer would be "That is an Anglo-Indian for you!"

Dennis loved poetry, and his favourite poet was Omar Khayyam(1050-1123) So it is fitting that I remember….

Here with a Loaf of Bread beneath the Bough,

A Flask of Wine, a Book of Verse and Thou

Beside me singing in the Wilderness

And Wilderness is Paradise now……..omar Khayyam

The moving Finger writes: and having writ moves on. ……..omar Khayyam

Dennis died in June 1999, leaving a hundred score of memories, not just with his family but also with everyone his shadow fell upon a gentle soul, who would cower at being exalted, and deeply humbled by this, a celebration of his life.
