Arthur Plugge Hull FC

Born in Hull in 1878 Arthur Plugge lived at 24 Fountain Street with His parents, the youngest son of J P. Plugge and his siblings three brothers and three sisters.

He was educated at Elmfleld College York, Dewsbury Grammar School, and Leeds University, he became science master under the Rev W. Johnson Archbishop Holegate School York.

Arthur Plugge was a prominent member of the Hull Football team and one of the players who played in the inaugural match against Liversedge at the Boulevard in 1895 and a month after the great split between the Rugby Union and Northern Union now known as Rugby League.

In 1899, at the age of 21 he left for the Antipodes, and became science master at Kings College Auckland.

Arthur Plugge joined the army as a commissioned officer and eventually promoted to Colonel he made his name in the Great War when in command of the First battalion, New Zealand Light Infantry. He was awarded CMG in 1915.

Who has had conferred  upon him,
a Companionship of the Order of St. Michael and St George by the King
for Distinguished Service in the field whilst in command
of 3rd Auckland Regiment of the New Zealand Contingent in the Dardanelles.

Lieut. Colonel Arthur Plugge, C.M.G. who gave his name to Plugge Plateau, Gallipoli he took part the landing at the Dardanelles, was twice wounded, twice mentioned in dispatches, and was given the C.M.G in 1915

Not seeing his, native city again until the war years, when, after showing great bravery and power of leadership at Gallipoli he was mentioned by General Sir Ian Hamilton for brilliant work he was invalided to England and to Hull.

Following his wartime injuries Col Plugge was given the post of divisional recreation office and is seen in the boxing ring acting as master of ceremonies.

his last visit to these shores and he returned to New Zealand in 1918 from France. He settled in Taupiri and was engaged in dairy-farming until his death in 1934
