David Edgar Morgan

Edgar Morgan Hull FC captain, Glamorganshire County, Welsh and Great Britain International Forward

Remarkable scenes of enthusiasm marked the arrival at Paragon Station on Wednesday 10 August of Hulls new players Edgar Morgan and George Oliver and Emlyn Gwynne, they were made welcomed by Hulls players and the supporters wishing them all the very best.

24 year old Morgan ex Llanelli player tipping the beam at 6ft and scaling 16st 7lb and arrives with excellent credentials, possessing four International caps including youngest Welsh honour of the class ever won Morgan age being only 11 years when he was capped for the Principality.

Of the typical Welsh cast, with his shock of black hair, Morgan will be easily spotted in the Hull ranks. For his size Morgan is said to be particularly fast and agile. He is also said to be able to grasp a rugby football in either hand and in Hulls team it is proposed to play him in the first row alongside fellow Welshman Oliver.

WW1 veteran

Like his two fellow countrymen, Emlyn Gwynne and George Oliver, Morgan saw much active service in the war, his unit being the Royal Engineers. By occupation he is said to be a tin-plate worker.

Rugby Union

Morgan was first selected to represent the Wales national team in 1920, a home game at the Cardiff Arms Park against Ireland. Morgan was reselected for the 1921 Championship, and played in the first three games; losses to England and Scotland, and his last union international appearance a win over France. During the 1921 season Edgar Morgan decided to switch codes and sign for Hull FC mainly for financial reasons and being an unemployed Tin Plate Worker.

Introduction into the game of Rugby League

Welsh International Edgar Morgan debut for Hull FC was at Leeds on Sat 27 Aug 1921 along with Joe Oliver also making his debut had a difficult time adjusting to the rigors of Rugby League. But judgment should be suspended until they acclimatised and familiarised with the N.U. game. Hull FC losing the game Leeds scoring 22 points to Hulls 8.

It did not take Morgan long to master the Northern Union game in so much so he was selected to represent Great Britain against the Australians at Headingly on the 1 Oct 1921, Morgan showed his doubters that the choice to play him so early in his Northern Union career was right and was without doubt a very good International player who had an outstanding debut for the Great Britain team.

Morgan performance justified his place in the team and was selected to play in the next test matches at the Boulevard Hull. For the Third Test Match Morgan, Oliver and Caswell were reserves, the three represented Wales at Pontypridd.

Hull FC captain

Edgar Morgan has been appointed as the new Hull FC captain for the 1923-1924 season a popular choice with the players and spectators, Danny Wyburn the old first team forward and ex Gloucestershire player will captain the A team.

For a period of time Morgan lost his rugby league form but in the 1926 season campaign he regained his International form and was one of the best second row forwards in the Rugby League.

Joining the Police Force

Unquestionably Edgar Morgan has been wise in preferring a permanent Government appointment in the uniform of the Welsh Constabulary to the uncertainty of professional football. The loss of his services to the Hull football club will be seriously felt and everyone will regret that such a well-conducted and fine type of player could not find a berth in the Hull police force and so remain at the disposal of the Boulevard club for re-creative purposes.

Edgar Morgan statistics are Hull FC 176 matches, 33 tries, Glamorganshire County 1, Wales 5 Test matches and International Honours Great Britain 2 Test matches 1 reserve.
